Is gum arabic vegan and vegetarian?

Short answer: yes. Gum arabic is a plant product, the dried sap of the acacia tree, with no animal ingredients and no alcohol, so it is suitable for both vegan and vegetarian diets.

Why it is suitable

It is made entirely from acacia tree sap, so there are no animal-derived ingredients at any stage. No dairy, no gelatine, no insect-derived colours or shellac, which is why it turns up so often as the stabiliser and fibre in plant-based food and drink. It is also the reason gum arabic is a common replacement when a formulation needs an animal-derived ingredient taken out.

What about halal?

Same ingredient, but the answer runs into certification rather than permissibility, so it has a page of its own: see is gum arabic halal and what to ask a supplier about batch documentation.

What about E414?

E414 is simply the food additive number for gum arabic. Same plant ingredient, same answer. You can read more about what gum arabic is and its use as acacia fibre.
